The intimate first person narration shows the dangerous lure of victim-blaming and self-blameof unfair gender expectations and power dynamics, of social pressure to maintain appearances no matter the cost. This book will leave you numb and broken. As I waited, I tired to wheel back, to figure out where our paths may have crossed, but I couldn't think. Janine and her sister grew up being exposed to some awful circumstances, which Janine talks about in her book. It took nearly two years before her killer, her former boyfriend Ron Ball, was sentenced for her murder.
Amy died in silent fear and pain. It tells the story of Janine Latus, and her sister's death. By the second chapter, it is apparent that the book is actually about Janine, and it often reads like a personal catharsis, working out the emotional struggle of the author in ways that seem more fit for a therapy session than a biography. The answer--to get out--is so obvious that they cannot comprehend the victim's point of view. Some of the reviewers seem to find this tale to be "whiny," though I am not sure how one could possibly write about some of these experiences in a positive or "upbeat" manner.
That childhood tragedy comes back to haunt her when she investigates a missing persons case that appears to be related to the disappearance of a six-year-old girl — and her own life. There is also a "girl-power" sort of feeling that is hard to explain. Her abuse started at a younger age, and it happened repeatedly, by multiple men, over a period of plus years. He wanted me to wear what he thought looked best. And why has no one reported him missing?

For an explanation of my rating system, please refer to my Goodreads. Amy was missing. Regardless, as an abuse survivor, several things that happened to Janine and Amy resonated with me. For the billions of men and women who are or will be victims of domestic violence, the most important message isn't about Amy's death.
The explanation on the back of the book is very deceiving. The takeaway is--or should be--that women like Janine fight everyday for their lives, for their freedom, for their safety I told him about the review I wrote on Tornado Warningand that I was an abuse survivor.
Haunted by this, Janine Latus turned her journalistic eye inward. The last thing I will remember is this: "In our family we say it always.
